A Spotlight on Our Commitment to Sustainability

Thursday, 5th June 2025

This World Environment Day 2025, we are proud to spotlight the progress being made across our schools to tackle climate change and build a greener, more sustainable future for our communities.

In line with the Department for Education’s Climate and Sustainability Strategy, each school has been developing a Climate Action Plan, led by a designated Sustainability Lead. On 23rd May, the Leads from all three schools came together for joint training to share ideas and ensure plans are on track to meet the 2025 target.

At Harper Green School, students and staff have launched several exciting initiatives to support climate action including a Cycle to School Scheme to encourage sustainable travel and offering free bike MOTs. Students also took part in a large-scale litter pick as part of the Great British Spring Clean, and for World Environment Day, they’re creating an eco-sculpture from recycled plastic bottles.

RBHS has been raising awareness through assemblies on plastic pollution and the importance of recycling and Year 10 students have been taking part in local litter picks in the local area as part of their Personal Development lessons. Junior prefects have also been supporting a litter-free school environment by collecting waste after break and lunch times.

The Duke of Edinburgh Award plays a key role across Leverhulme Trust, with hundreds of students engaging in activities that support sustainability, including learning bushcraft, outdoor cooking, and reducing waste in the wild.

At Lostock Primary, World Environment Day has inspired a full week of themed activities across the school. Reception children are reading The Adventures of a Plastic Bottle, while older pupils are learning about energy reduction and making lava lamps from reused materials. The school’s Eco Council is also working towards the Eco-Schools Green Flag Award and recently launched a Walk to School initiative to reduce emissions. The upcoming green-themed summer fair will include a sustainable fashion show and wildlife habitat creation.

Next week, during The Big Green Week, all schools will take part in a joint Climate Champions event, starting with a Leverhulme Litter Pick in partnership with Bolton Council’s ‘Love Bolton, Hate Litter’ campaign.

These initiatives reflect our Trust-wide commitment to sustainability. Earlier this year, EV charging points were installed across the Trust to support cleaner travel and reduce local air pollution.
