RBHS Year 10 and 11 Students Visit CERN in Geneva

Monday, 15th April 2024

A group of Year 10 and Year 11 RBHS students headed on a journey of scientific discovery last week, venturing to the heart of Europe to visit CERN, the European Organisation for Nuclear Research located in Geneva.

The trip began with a visit to the old town, where students discovered Geneva’s rich cultural tapestry whilst exploring the cobbled streets. They found treasures at the Musée d’Art d’Histoire, with some renowned artworks dating back to the 12th century.

Undoubtedly, the highlight of the trip was their guided tours of CERN itself. Led by knowledgeable experts, the students were introduced to the world of particle physics and how the organisation helps uncover the mysteries of the universe. The visit to CERN provided valuable insight for those planning to pursue studies in particle and quantum physics when they start university in September.

The following day, they ventured to another museum dedicated to scientific advancements that have often been overlooked or misunderstood. Through engaging interactive displays and exhibits, they unravelled the intricate tapestry of scientific progress, gaining a new appreciation for the evolution of human understanding.

As the trip came to a close, the students savoured their final moments in Geneva by exploring the city to buy souvenirs for themselves and loved ones. Some even made a pitstop at iconic landmarks such as the United Nations and the majestic Jet d’Eau fountain.

It was an incredible trip enjoyed by all, and the group returned home not only with memories but also with a deeper understanding of the wonders of science and the limitless possibilities that lie ahead.
