Harper Green Students Take on Silver DofE Practice Expedition
Monday, 27th April 2026

A group of students from Harper Green School recently took part in their Silver practice expedition as part of the The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award, continuing their preparations for the qualifying expedition later this year.
Based at Waddecar Activity Centre, students spent three days developing their navigation and expedition skills across varied terrain, including routes through River Brock and Beacon Fell Country Park on the edge of the Forest of Bowland.
Working in small groups, students built confidence in map reading, route planning and decision-making, applying these skills in real conditions and learning from challenges along the way.
Despite colder and windy conditions at times, students remained positive and showed strong resilience throughout, supporting one another and working effectively as teams. In the evenings, they prepared and cooked their own meals, further developing independence and camp craft skills, with time to relax together after a full day of walking.
Mrs Fercsi, DofE Lead, said: “We were really proud of how the students approached the expedition. They showed resilience, worked well together and made great progress with their navigation and independence.”
The practice expedition marks an important step in their Duke of Edinburgh journey, with students now looking ahead to their qualifying expedition later this year.
