Criminology Students Take Part in Bolton Coroner's Court Workshop

Wednesday, 25th September 2024

On Monday, 23rd and Tuesday, 24th September 2024, Year 9, 10 and Year 13 Criminology students at Rivington and Blackrod High School had the unique opportunity of stepping into a courtroom setting at Bolton Coroner’s Court, in an immersive experience organised by The National Justice Museum.

The day included a Q&A session with Crown Court judges, followed by a mock trial where each student took on essential roles in the courtroom. Students played the parts of judge, prosecution and defence barristers, solicitors, witnesses, defendant, and jurors. Barristers and solicitors collaborated to present their cases using witness testimonies and even engaged in cross-examination, while the jurors deliberated, with the foreperson delivering their verdict. Interestingly, although both groups used the same case, each reached a different verdict.

Beyond understanding courtroom procedures, students also gained insights into the career pathways for various legal roles. One Year 12 student shared, "It was the best day of my life! This is what I want to do in my career."
